Animal Description

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) rank among the largest subspecies of brown bears, surpassed in size only by the Kamchatka brown bears and the Kodiak bears. Their size can vary significantly depending on factors such as timing and geographical location.

The most substantial populations reside along the coastal regions of the Alaskan Peninsula, where males can weigh up to 389 kilograms (858 lb) and females up to 207 kilograms (456 lb). In contrast, grizzly populations in the northern interior of Canada tend to be much smaller, with males averaging around 139 kilograms (306 lb) and females around 95 kilograms (209 lb). Interestingly, these sizes align closely with those of the American black bear population in the same area.

Typically, grizzly bears in this subspecies measure between 198 cm (78 in) and 240 cm (94 in) in total length, with a shoulder height averaging 102 cm (40 in) and hindfoot length averaging 28 cm (11 in). Newborn bears may weigh less than.

Numerous studies have delved into the genetic ancestry of the grizzly bear, leading to revisions in its classification based on genetic characteristics. Also, despite the existence of two morphological forms, the grizzly and the coastal brown bear, there isn’t a clear differentiation in their mitochondrial DNA lineages. In 2018, the genome of the grizzly bear underwent sequencing, revealing a length of 2,328.64 Mb (mega-basepairs) and encompassing a total of 30,387 genes.
